Platform Bird Feeders

Platform bird feeders are simpler than many other feeder styles, as the basic concept is simply an open platform or flat area that both holds the bird food and serves as the perching area for the feeding birds.

Platform feeders are popular because they can be used with almost any bird food, and they will attract many types of birds that can't use other feeders like tube feeders, such as many birds that typically feed off the ground.

Mounting Platform Feeders: These are some of the most versatile feeders when it comes to mounting options. Since you may be trying to attract groundfeeders, you can mount them just above the ground, or somewhat above the ground on a small post or even a tree stump. An unused bird bath pedestal is another choice, and it's very common to see one of these on a patio post. To avoid the loss of seed in high winds you may want to choose a spot that is a little sheltered from the wind.

Some birds that are attracted to these feeders include: Cardinals, especially Northern Cardinals, tufted titmice, juncos, jays, painted buntings, towhees, chickadees, sparrows and doves.

One problem that often arises with many feeders are pests such as squirrels. Some platform feeders try to deal with this by adding a roof that is low enough that the birds can still easily feed, but a squirrel will not be able to land on the feeder and stay put to feed. If squirrels are a real problem you may need to hang the feeder instead of mounting it.

It's also good to have some drainage to avoid having the seed rot from moisture. Many platform feeders have a mesh bottom that allows drainage but keeps the seed in place. If you choose this option take care to clean the mesh periodically, as it's a relatively fine mesh and can be clogged with debris.
